The Paris moment that changed everything
In 1997, a young Colombian biologist named Luz Marina Restrepo—affectionately known as “La Mona”—worked in the stem cell laboratory of the Hospital San Luis in Paris. Every day, she saw how small fragments of tissue were transformed into millions of cells with extraordinary potential.
But there was a problem: this revolutionary science was not reaching those who needed it most in Colombia.
The seed of a family vision
While La Mona was developing her doctorate in genetic modification of stem cells, her nephew Alejandro grew up with a different but complementary passion.
From the age of 5, he ran with his father before school, forging a mindset of consistency and perseverance that would lead him to become a high-performance athlete and, later, a medical specialist in physical activity and sports.
The connection was inevitable. Alejandro saw athletes whose careers ended prematurely due to injuries that surgeries failed to resolve completely.
La Mona had the science to change that reality.
The project that united science and heart
During Alejandro’s specialization, aunt and nephew proposed a revolutionary research project: treating cartilage injuries in Colombian professional soccer players using mesenchymal stem cells and physiotherapy.
The results were extraordinary. Patients with grade 4 chondromalacia—almost complete loss of cartilage—began to recover not only function but hope.
Beyond the laboratory: The real impact
But La Mona had a deep concern.
After almost 30 years as a professor and researcher at the University of Antioquia, directing the Tissue Engineering and Cell Therapy group, she felt that something crucial was missing: seeing the direct impact on people’s lives.
